Retail and Custom Fonts for the
Bold and Curious Typesetter

Big Fog Foundry is an independent type foundry based in West Virginia. As the letter-centric arm of design studio Big Fog, we know the difference the right typeface can make to a brand or logo. When drawing fonts for our retail catalog, our aim is to add more useful typographic tools to the collective tool belt of contemporary graphic design. Whether it’s through expanding on a forgotten face from the ‘70s or drawing something new, we strive to make fonts that are equal parts fun and functional.

Brian Dove

Typeface designer

Brian Dove is a multidisciplinary designer and founder of Big Fog Foundry. Brian’s exploration into type design stemmed from his logo design and branding practice at Big Fog, a design studio he operates with creative partner Valerie Burgess. After releasing a few single style faces through Big Fog, the studio spun up Big Fog Foundry as a semi-separate home for Brian’s growing retail font catalog. When not designing typefaces, Brian can be found reading science fiction, writing music, or working in his veggie garden.

Logotype Design

Your logotype is a visual representation of your brand and is an important first impression to your customers. We started drawing type to make better logos, and would be happy to work with you to design the perfect logotype for your brand.

Logotype Refinement

Even a great logotype can be ruined by poorly drawn curves. We are happy to work with you to refine your existing logotype to make it sing.

Custom Typeface Design

Typefaces shape your brand’s voice. In addition to our retail catalog, we create custom typeface designs for clients and brands of all shapes and sizes. Get in touch to learn more.

Trial fonts

Fill out the form to download free trial versions of our fonts (joining the newsletter is optional).

Our trial fonts include full kerning and OpenType features with a limited character set (basic Latin, numerals, and some punctuation). Trial fonts may not be used for commercial work, but can be used for pitching, internal exploration, or student work. If you need a wider character set to adequately test the font for your use case, please get in touch.

Licensing

Licensing fonts can be confusing, but does it have to be? Sort of. But we’re here to help.

As organizations use type in increasingly cross-platform ways, it no longer makes sense to need separate licenses for desktop, web, etc. Additionally, larger organizations extract more value from the type they license, regardless of how big their design team is. That’s why we sell licenses to use our typefaces based on one factor: the size of the company using the fonts.

Our license covers all typical platforms and the price only varies based on the value it provides the licensee—again, solely based on the size of the company licensing the font, not the number of people using the font.

Before licensing our typefaces, please read our End User License Agreement (EULA). If you have any questions that aren’t answered in the FAQ section below, feel free to get in touch.

FAQ

If you’re doing work for a client, your client/their company should hold the license to use the font. This covers your use of it on work for that client, but not on unrelated work.

Company size is determined by the number of employees working for the company that holds the license. For our purposes, this includes owners, board members, and part time employees or freelancers working over 15 hours per week (on average).

If your company outgrows the tier for which it holds a license, you are required to update your license within 60 days of that change. Please get in touch with us to upgrade your license and you will only be charged for the difference between tiers, not the full amount of the new tier.

Fonts are delivered in OTF, TTF, WOFF, & WOFF2 files. Your download will also include a copy of your license which you should retain for your records.

There are some restrictions to the use of our typefaces which are covered in detail in the EULA. In general, you may not use our fonts:

  • To promote bigotry or hate speech
  • For political campaigns
  • To train AI or large language models

Character sets may vary between typefaces, but at a minimum our fonts support the Latin Plus character set. Supported languages can be found on each typefaces’ page.

As native English speakers, we acknowledge that our understanding of characters that aren’t used in English is imperfect. If you find you need an adjustment or additional character to make use of our fonts, please get in touch.

Fonts are software, and like any other software they will occasionally receive updates. Updates usually include things like better kerning, improved outlines, and additional characters. When you purchase a license, you’ll receive updates for the font(s) you have licensed at no extra charge.

Please contact us for a custom Enterprise License.

Legally speaking, nothing. Logistically, the studio and the foundry have different audiences so we decided to give them separate websites. Big Fog offers design and creative services for clients who, more often than not, aren’t interested in licensing typefaces.

In addition to making the fonts, Brian makes all the animations and graphics. If you’d like to hire him to make freak lil animations, he’d love to hear from you.
